Getting into dentistry? Here are 7 things you must know

Dentistry- art and science of diagnosing, and treating conditions of teeth and related structures of oral and maxillofacial region, is one of two basic choices made by medical aspirants these days. Most of the times, BDS is second choice after MBBS as most of us think as if less costly means more easier and with almost half deposit than that of MBBS, You can still have 'Dr.' prefix, atleast I thought that way. Dentistry is also one of highest paid profession in Australia and US, this might tempt you into getting into dentistry.
But here are certain things you must know before getting into this noble profession of creating smiles.

 1It costs less, doesn’t mean it’s easy

BDS is not easy as many of us think. You have to go through everything other medical students have to go through. All 9 systems in basic sciences, General Medicine, General Surgery, Anesthesiology everything is included in dentistry and is equally important. Forensic Medicine is a 100 marks paper in dentistry in TU BDS, which medical students give for only 50 marks. By this you can make out, BDS isn’t easy at all.

2. You have to search patient
There are no dental colleges which fully provide enough patients to their students. You will have to search them every normal day in clinicals even during your exams. Class II and CD patients are not joke to find. Getting a child patient in your exam day, and he/she refuses to open mouth; what will get worse than that? You can’t get/do patient, you are sure shot fail. Just imagine, having a bulky Periodontics viva without a hint what your patient is going to be like. With no gaps in between university exams, finishing exam at 6-7pm, searching patients late night and facing next exam next day with barely a 4 hour sleep and zero preparation. Do you think that’s easy??

3. You have to buy your own instruments and materials
Not only patients, you have to buy your own sets of instruments, pay for your patients, and all required materials all 4.5 years. It won’t cost you more during admission but it will surely come around that of MBBS.

                                                                                     4. You have patient quotas
Most of colleges set minimal required patients quotas. You have to finish them in time, get signed. But what if you can’t finish? Most of them won’t allow you to even appear in final exams and even if they did, you are almost sure to fail.

5. You have to pass in internals to qualify for university exams
In most of dental colleges affiliated to KU and TU, you have to atleast score 50% marks in internals to even appear for final exams. Internal marks are important judgement of your overall performance of whole year.

6. Practical Exams aren’t easy
Practical exams aren’t that easy in BDS. You will have to get your own patients, diagnose the case, and perform a specified procedure. A simple mistake and your 6 months are wasted. Vivas aren’t easy either. You are expected to practice independently after completion of your course, so you are expected to know almost everything. That makes it even more difficult.

7. Barrier system
There is barrier system in 2nd year as in MBBS. You can’t go through unless you complete second year. To add to that, TU has a system called ‘Not Fit for Technical Education (NFT)’, which means if you can’t pass 1st year in 6 attempts and 2nd year in 4 attempts, you aren’t fit for technical education and won’t be eligible to study any technical subjects in TU.

Writing this article I by no means I'm trying to demoralize anyone wanting to get into dentistry. But, it requires alot of patience, motivation, dedication and hard work. You have to be mentally strong because once you get in there is no way out.Choose Dentistry wisely.
